How to Talk About Intimacy
Simple ways to bring up intimacy with a partner, listen to each other, and make room for an honest answer.
Pick a moment with room to talk
A walk or a quiet moment at home can be an easier time to check in than when one of you is distracted or about to leave. Try asking, “Is now a good time to talk about how we’ve been connecting lately?”
If your partner says they’d rather talk another time, respect that answer. You can ask if they’d like to suggest a time that works for both of you.
Say one thing you mean
Try naming a specific moment you liked. “I loved how unhurried Sunday morning felt” gives your partner something concrete to respond to. If something felt uncomfortable, you can name that just as plainly.
Ask a question and give them time to answer. “When do you feel most connected to me?” opens up the conversation without asking them to agree with you.
Leave space for either person to pause
Talking about an idea is its own step. If you decide to try something together, check that you both want to, and make it easy for either person to slow down or change their mind.
One thing to try
Try opening with: “I’ve been thinking about what makes us feel close. Would you be up for talking about it sometime?”
